More development means more attractions. But for a coastal area Indian River County is only moderately developed, primarily on the Hwy A1A stripthat’s cuddled by the Atlantic and Intracoastal Waterway, and in Vero Beach. Working north to south, you can start with some environmental education at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge,  561- 589-2089, which is something of a living memorial for its namesake, a University of Florida professor who met, fell in love with and spent his life studying endangered sea turtles. This refuge is near the Indian River-Brevard County line, on the barrier island side off A1A. It’s the largest nesting site for loggerhead turtles (as many as 1,000) in the Western Hemisphere and its beaches also beckon green turtles and leatherbacks.
